A Brief History of the Vieng Xai Caves
Amid the war, the caves served as a safe haven for the Pathet Lao and their allies, like the North Vietnamese. Experts speculate that as many as 20,000 people made their homes in the caves at any time.
As the US Air Force bombed the area heavily, the caves were used as a base of operations and a place to live and work. The bombing ceased in 1973 when a ceasefire was declared, and the newly founded town of Vieng Xay became the capital of the liberated zone. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic was proclaimed on December 2nd, 1975, and the capital was moved to Vientiane.
The caves were strategically located near the Vietnamese border, providing communist forces with logistical and political support. It also served as a detention facility for captured US servicemen. The caves served as a political re-education center following the war and are now open to the public.

The Vieng Xai caves are in the northeastern Laos province of Houaphanh. The caves are difficult to reach, but the journey is well worth it. Visitors can reach the caves by bus or car from the nearby Sam Neua.
Every day, tours to the caves in English start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cave tour lasts about two hours and requires visitors to walk about 1.5 kilometers. Several English-speaking guides are available to take visitors through the history of the caves and point out the various features.
The caves themselves are stunning. They are enormous, with some reaching 100 meters in height. The remains of hospitals, schools, and other structures built inside the caves will be visible to visitors. Stalactites and stalagmites, uncommon in this type of environment, can be found in some caves.
The theater, built inside one of the caves, is one of the highlights of the tour. The theater was used to show propaganda films and stage performances for cave dwellers.

Traveling to Vieng Xai
The Vieng Xai Caves are located in the remote Houaphan province of Laos, so they can be challenging to reach. The closest major city is Sam Neua, which can be reached by bus or plane from Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
From Sam Neua to Vieng Xai, songthaews occasionally travel. Sam Neua’s songthaews leave from the Nathong bus station, located approximately 4 km east of the city center. This is the local (intra-provincial) bus station (1-2 km after the airport). The earliest possible bus or songthaew leaves around 8 a.m. and takes an hour. Another alternative is to depart from Sam Neua’s central (inter-provincial) bus terminal at either 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. in the morning and get off in Vieng Xai before reaching Vietnam.
No songthaews might be running back to Sam Neua during the low season. In the afternoon, around 1:30 p.m., a bus travels from Sam Tai to Sam Neua; in the late afternoon, between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., some buses travel from Vietnam to Sam Neua. Travelers using the bus from Thanh Hoa in Vietnam can get off to Vieng Xai for the night.
You could rent a scooter to go to Vieng Xai from Sam Neua. However, only Dan Nao Restaurant rents scooters, and they only have a couple bikes available. There are only two right turns along this route, making it quite convenient. The first turn to the right is at a major crossroads with a gas station on one corner. The distance between Vieng Xai and the second crossroads is 2 kilometers.

The caves are more accessible to explore without mud and slippery conditions during the dry season, which spans from November to May. Because of the high temperatures in the caves, visitors should dress appropriately.
